We talked about hemispheres today. I have two small foam balls painted to look (loosely) like the globe that have been cut, one through the Equator and one through the poles. We placed the hemispheres around the map and then showed how to squish a round globe into a flat map (by first cutting it into 2). This is Caleb practicing with the clay.

I have had my hemisphere globes made for several weeks and have been waiting for an opportunity to introduce them. I was struggling with making them relevant. Thanks to Susan at The Moveable Alphabet for showing her use of clay in this concept. I am not going to delve into the plate tectonics and more advanced things her blog describes, but today was a good starting point.
