The Berenstain Bears and the Biggest Brag, by Mike Berenstain (son of creators Stan and Jan), published by Zonderkidz, is a familiar story for those of us who grew up with the Berenstain Bears teaching us all about the right and wrong ways to live life as a wee bear cub.
In this story, Brother and Sister work really hard at everything they do (sports, school, music, etc.). They also work really hard at outdoing the best that the other has achieved. If Brother gets an A, Sister brags about her A+. If Sister scored a goal, Brother scored the winning goal.
My kids can't be the only ones.
Mama and Papa try to stop it, but the boasting and bragging builds and builds until Grizzly Gramps points out to them that they are both being fools Yes, those are the words Grizzly Gramps used which I'm not sure are the words I would have chosen, but they seem to get the job done. In typical Berenstain Bears fashion, they all skip off happily down the road seeing the error of their ways.
In their efforts to stop the fighting, Mama, Papa, and Grizzly Gramps mention various instances of Biblical references to pride. There is also a page of activities and family discussion questions inside the back cover. These two pieces of the book make this an excellent resource for character building within families or small groups of children.
