Submarines, Secrets, & A Daring Rescue Review

Submarines, Secrets, & A Daring Rescue, by Robert J Skead, published by Zondervan, is a historical fiction chapter book ideal for upper elementary aged kids (8-12).  My 11 year old Aidan absolutely loved it! He immediately went to the computer to look for more books in the series.  (This is actually the second book.) His exact quote was, "I would recommend it to anyone in the universe."  (He's a bit dramatic!)

Set during the revolutionary war, the story revolves around two boys who are twins.  Their dad is a spy and sends the boys to deliver messages.  The older brother is captured and the troops need gunpowder.  In the course of the story, the boys manage to navigate "Turtle" the first submarine, attack a ship, and save prisoners, including their brother.

In addition to the exciting historical fiction storyline, the book also includes a glossary of Revolutionary War information and actual letters on which certain parts of the story are based.  Some reviewers felt that the war scenes might have been a tad violent for the target age group, but I felt they were ok.

Overall I would recommend this book as a fun read for children in the target age range and it would also be an appropriate historical fiction book to supplement the study of the Revolutionary War.

In exchange for an honest review, I received a free copy of this title through the BookLook Bloggers review program. All opinions are my own.
